STANDARD 3: Professional staff members and leaders participate in an ongoing system of STEM-specific professional learning.
The teachers and staff at Campbell STEM Elementary are provided with opportunities to acquire best practices in STEM education during professional development days, staff meetings, professional learning communities (PLC), and book studies. Teachers attend a weekly PLC every Monday. PLC’s are focused on grade levels, working in collaboration to support students' educational experience through developing STEM instruction that aligns with the Alaska State Standards. During PLC, teachers examine data, reflect, discuss next steps, and develop STEM instruction.
The staff at Campbell STEM is provided with opportunities to stay current in best practices through attending conferences focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) integration across all content areas and specials. r, Staff have attended or presented at various conferences to include ISTE. Staff have also been offered the opportunity to attend STEM and culture integration training through FabLab. Various STEM training opportunities will be offered to student leadership through FabLab and student council during the 2023-2024 school year..
Various staff meetings and professional developments focused on the Engineer Design Model were conducted and attended by staff and leadership. The Engineer Design Model was presented to families during parent-information meetings.
During the 2023 - 2024 school year, staff will be offered the opportunity to participate in a book study, “Learning by Doing: A Handbook for Professional Learning Communities at Work" by DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, Many, & Mattos. At the end of the 2023 school year, Campbell STEM experienced a notable number of staff turn over. The majority of new staff were new to PLC's and STEM instruction. More experienced staff will support new staff through a mentoring program.
