A: Yes, a student may choose to replace the graduation cap with cultural headwear.
Q: Can I replace my graduation gown with a traditional cultural regalia?
A: Yes, A state agency, a municipality, the University of Alaska, or a school district may not prohibit an individual from wearing tribal regalia or wearing or carrying objects of traditional cultural significance at a public event.
Q: Can I wear traditional footwear?
A: Yes, tribal regalia means clothing, accessories, and objects of cultural significance worn or carried during traditional tribal ceremonies, celebrations, or gatherings.
Q: Can I “decorate” my cap for fun, like I’ve seen students do in college ceremonies?
A: No, it can only be adorned with traditional objects of tribal regalia or recognized objects of cultural significance.
For purpose of this protocol, the following items have the following meanings:
1. “Adornment” means something attached to, or worn with, the cap, gown, and stole customarily worn at school graduation ceremonies
Adornments shall not include any alphabetical letters other than the student’s name(s) or numerals other than the graduating class (e.g. Class of 2024). Other written statements, phrases, or slogans are not permitted.
Q: Can country flags count as cultural regalia or adornments?
A: Yes. The district recognizes that cultural identity and heritage is often closely associated with one’s national heritage (past or present). Flags should be displayed in a respectful manner consistent with the etiquette of the flag of that country.
Q: Do I need to notify anyone if I intend to make changes to my graduation attire?
A: No. Students do not need to notify the district in advance if they choose to participate. A state agency, a municipality, the University of Alaska, or a school district may not prohibit an individual from wearing tribal regalia or wearing or carrying objects of traditional cultural significance at a public event.
Q: What if a student is wearing attire that is not allowable?
A: If school staff identify attire that does not comply with the standards established in HB 152 and AR 5127(b), the matter will be referred to school administration for final review. The school district retains the authority to prohibit an item that is likely to cause substantial disruption of, or material interference with, the formal procession of the graduation ceremony. Students are encouraged to talk with their principals in advance if they have questions.
Q: What if a student’s attire does not meet the requirements?
A: The school administrator will work with the student and his or her family to see if the regalia can be adjusted onsite to fit the specific expectations outlined in the AR. If it cannot be adjusted, the team will hold onto the item(s) so it can be safely returned to the family following the graduation ceremony. The team will have extra caps, gowns, and stoles on hand if a student needs a replacement of one of the elements of their graduation attire. -

2025 Graduation Parking
Dear Graduates and Families of Graduates,
What an exciting season this is for you! We want you to know we share your enthusiasm as the long-awaited graduation day approaches. With that in mind, we have a few pointers and requests which will make the event memorable:
-
Though the day will be hectic, snap a couple of photos before you head out the door to the ceremony.
- Click this link for the bag policy.
-
The Alaska Airlines Center parking lot will open at 12 PM for the 2 PM ceremony. Plan to arrive at the venue early as traffic and parking cause delays.
-
Please note the following ways in which to be respectful of other graduates’ families and the venue manager:
-
Make your way to your vehicle immediately following the ceremony and proceed to exit the parking lot, allowing timely access for the next event.
-
Refrain from tailgating and using the parking lot as a celebration venue - instead, make plans to gather family and friends at home after the ceremony.
-
No tents or barbeques will be permitted at the venue. Your own backyard is a much more appealing place for a party tent than an asphalt parking lot, and your photos there will make better keepsakes.
-
Refrain from any sort of littering, including confetti, streamers, loose candy, etc., as such objects impact birds and the environment.
-
-
Remember to take pictures along the way – graduates and families all have reason to commemorate seniors’ many accomplishments.
-
Have a safe journey home to celebrate.

2025 Senior Graduation Ticket Information FAQ
2025 Graduation Ticket Information
How many tickets will my senior receive for graduation?
Seniors whose ceremony is taking place at the Alaska Airlines Center will receive six tickets to distribute to family and friends. Tickets are determined by capacity and number in the graduating class.
When will seniors get their tickets?
Tickets will be handed out during graduation practice, which typically take place the week prior to the graduation ceremony. Please check with your school for the date and time of their graduation practice.
How did ASD determine the number of tickets that each senior would receive for graduation at the Alaska Airlines Center?
While the overall seating capacity of the Alaska Airlines Center is listed as 5,000 online, the seating capacity for ASD graduations will be closer to 2,200. The capacity and the number of seniors in the graduating class were used to determine the number of tickets each senior would receive.
Why are there only 2,200 seats available?
In order to provide adequate floor space for the graduates, faculty, and the band/orchestra, the first tier of seating will be retracted, which reduces the seating capacity in the arena by about half. The seating behind the stage on the second and third level will also be closed off because it does not offer a view of the ceremony.
How can family and friends watch the ceremony if we don’t have enough tickets for them to attend in person?
The district will provide live streaming for all of the graduation ceremonies at the Alaska Airlines Center. The link will be available on the district’s graduation webpage. An archived video of the ceremony will also be available on the district graduation webpage in the days following the ceremony.
If other families are not using all of their tickets, can I use some of theirs?
Yes. The district encourages families who do not plan to use all of their tickets to find other families who may want additional tickets.
Can I use tickets from another ASD graduation ceremony?
No. Tickets will be clearly labeled with the school, date, and time of the graduation ceremony. Tickets from one school cannot be used at another school’s ceremony.
What if I have a unique family situation that may require more tickets?
While the district cannot provide extra tickets to all families who may want them because of the limited seating capacity at AAC, we understand some families may have special circumstances that need to be considered. Principals will receive a limited number of additional tickets they can distribute to address unique family needs. Please contact your school if you have a hardship request you want the principal to consider.
