Cougar Community Connections: End of Semester 1
Dear Service High School Families, Students, and Staff
Being part of the Service High School community is truly a privilege. As we approach this joyous holiday season, I’d like to take a moment to extend warm holiday wishes to you and your families. Happy Holidays!
Reflecting on the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year, we are thrilled to share some of the incredible milestones and accomplishments we’ve achieved together. One highlight is the successful establishment of our Freshman Academy, which brings together a dedicated team of teachers committed to supporting our students’ transition into high school. This semester, our Freshman Career Exploration course has focused on equipping students with essential skills for high school success and preparing them to be college and career-ready.
As part of this program, freshmen participated in a career expo day, giving them valuable insights into various professions available in our community. Freshman Academy Assistant Principal, Ms. Crow, shared: “This year, we’ve seen a notable increase in freshman attendance compared to this time last year. Additionally, behavior referrals have decreased, highlighting the positive choices our students are making every day.”
Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that on January 31st, the Freshman Academy will be touring the University of Alaska Î÷Ê©Ö±²¥APP (UAA) campus. This visit offers students an incredible opportunity to explore college life and begin envisioning their future academic paths.
During this first semester, our students have showcased their exceptional talents and achieved remarkable milestones, both individually and as teams. Activities Assistant Principal, Mr. Stone, remarked: “Service High School continues to shine on the court, mat, trails, stage, ice, and pool. This fall, our Cougars finished third in State Volleyball, capping the most successful season in 20 years. Our swim and dive team upheld their legacy, finishing second at State this year, while our gymnastics team finished third in State, trailing Dimond by only four points. The Service Rifle Team wrapped up an incredible season as CIC regular season champions and secured second place at the State tournament. Currently, our girls’ and boys’ hockey teams are dominating on the ice, and our skiers are gearing up for their first race. On the mat, our wrestlers are having a fantastic season, and our fine arts department is dazzling audiences with outstanding concerts and performances. Of course, there is no debate that our DDF (Drama, Debate, and Forensics) team is the best in the State! Looking forward, we’re excited for the upcoming basketball season and the continued success of our e-sports teams. Please come out and support your Cougars!”
Our students have also made remarkable academic progress. The number of Honor Roll students has grown from 183 last year to 253 this semester, demonstrating their hard work and dedication. As Student Services Assistant Principal, Mr. Little, emphasized: “We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support of our families. Your encouragement, especially in helping us maintain over 90% student attendance, plays a pivotal role in the success of our students.”
Just a reminder: As we prepare for finals on December 18th and 19th, please help your students finish the semester strong. If your family has travel plans and your student is unable to attend finals, please connect with their teachers to schedule make-up exams. (Details can be found in the attached link.)
Once again I want to thank you all for being such an integral part of our student’s success. Your involvement and encouragement contribute immensely to the positive spirit and achievements of Service High School.
We wish you a holiday season filled with joy, laughter, and cherished moments with your loved ones. Here’s to a bright and prosperous New Year! Thank you for all your support, and as always, Go Cougars!
Warm Regards and blessings to you all ,
Mrs. Azzam, Mr. Stone, Mr. Little, and Mrs. Crow

Cougar Community Connection October 20 2024
Dear Parents, Staff, and Students;
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the challenges our Service High community has recently faced. It has been a difficult time for all of us, but I feel truly honored to serve such a resilient and supportive community. The strength and perseverance you’ve shown have been inspiring to my staff, my students, and me. I am especially grateful for all the support of our staff, particularly our counselors, who have been a source of guidance and care as we continue to heal together.
As a reminder, Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 24th. Students will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m., and the conference sessions will follow this schedule:
- Conferences: 1:00–3:30 p.m.
- Break: 3:30–5:00 p.m.
- Conferences: 5:00–8:00 p.m.
This is a great opportunity to connect with your student's teachers and discuss how we can continue supporting their growth throughout the school year. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan for the evening:
- Be sure to visit with all your student’s teachers. There’s no need to schedule a time; simply stop by and keep meetings brief to accommodate others.
- Families of seniors and juniors are invited to the theater from 6:00–7:30 p.m. for our fall "Planning for College Workshop." This session, led by our counselor Mr. Rufner, will cover how to find the right school fit and provide guidance on the college application process.
- Don’t forget to join PTSA, and stop by the Cougar Cache!
As we wrap up the first quarter of the school year, we also want to celebrate some student accomplishments. Our students have worked hard, and we are so proud of their achievements!
From Ms. Palmisano, our Freshman Academy Assistant Principal:
"It’s been a wonderful start to the school year! Our students recently attended the first-ever ASD Career Expo, exploring over 130 career paths and meeting professionals in various industries. It was an inspiring event, and we thank you for encouraging their participation and growth. Let’s carry this energy into the next quarter!"From Mr. Stone, our Activities Assistant Principal:
"Our Service Cougars have had an exciting start to the school year. We brought back Homecoming floats and hosted a Cougar Tailgate party, which had an amazing turnout of students, parents, and community members. The National Guard joined us with games and a rock wall, and students enjoyed smashing an old truck with sledgehammers! On the football field, our Cougars won, and we celebrated with an unforgettable Homecoming dance. In addition to all the fun, our students have excelled academically. Both our Flag Football and Tennis teams earned the GPA award for the highest overall grade point averages in the region and state! Our fall sports teams are seeing record participation, our Rifle team remains undefeated, and our Swim and Dive team continues to impress. Volleyball is finishing strong, and gymnastics is gearing up for regionals. Our Fine Arts department has also delivered incredible performances from the band, choir, and orchestra.”
From Mr. Little, our Student Services Assistant Principal: "The Student Services office is committed to supporting the overall well-being of our students. It's a space where important life lessons are learned—lessons not found in textbooks or on Chromebooks, but about building relationships and developing life skills that will help students become strong, contributing members of our community.
One significant issue affecting schools across the country is vaping. We ask for your support in having conversations with your students about the dangers of vaping. It impacts students of all ages—boys and girls, freshmen to seniors, across all races and socio-economic backgrounds. Below, we’ve included a couple of helpful resources from the Centers for Disease Control and the American Cancer Society, but many more are available online." Let's work together to keep our students safe and informed!
I want to close by saying how proud we are of our student's hard work and dedication, along with the incredible efforts of our staff. We deeply appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing you on October 24th for Parent-Teacher Conferences.
Warm regards,
Service High Administration Team -

Dear Cougars community, parents, students, and staff,
Throughout the school year, we will inform you about the exciting events at Service Cougar Land. Last week was truly memorable, thanks in large part to Mr. Stone, our activities principal, who poured his heart and soul into ensuring the week was a great success. Mr. Stone shared:
"Our Service community, alongside our dedicated staff and students, came together to create lifelong memories during Homecoming Week. Cougar pride was on full display during spirit week, the assembly, homecoming floats, the football game, and the dance. The smiles and cheers from our alumni, staff, and students were loud and proud on Friday night as our Cougars JV and Varsity teams triumphed over the Colony Knights."As the end of the quarter approaches, some parents have raised questions about checking their students' progress via Canvas or Q. Here’s a quick guide to clarify:
- Canvas is an excellent platform for teachers who use it to post all necessary learning resources for their students.
- Each teacher maintains a Canvas course for their subjects, and students must bring their devices daily to complete assignments and access Canvas materials.
- Canvas is also a convenient way for teachers to communicate with students and their families, sharing academic progress, participation, attendance updates, and more.
- Teachers collect and grade assignments via Canvas, then sync or enter those grades into Q.
- Q remains the official grade book of record for ASD. Therefore Q is where you should check your student's academic progress and official grades. If you still have specific questions or concerns, please reach out to your student’s teacher.
We are also pleased to offer some valuable opportunities for Academic Support and Resources to support your student’s success:
-
Cougar Academic Support Program (Math):
Ms. Souja offers math support sessions in Room G17 during the following times:- Monday: 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM
- Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday: 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM
-
Free and Reduced Lunch Application:
You can apply for free and reduced lunch at any time during the school year. The deadline for initial applications is September 30th. For more details, visit the nutrition services website here: .
Thank you for your continued support in making these events safe, successful, and enjoyable for our students.
Sincerely,
Service High AdministrationBring out the Best in Others!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Some of you have reached out inquiring information about our ASD/Service High Fall MAPS assessment.
Thank you for reaching out about Fall MAPS Testing. At Service, we value our students and our families. Our mission is to provide a superior education. We believe and expect at Service that all students will show their knowledge and skills each year during our state testing. Please consider the information below and additional information from ASD on the MAPS Assessment when making your testing refusal decisions.
Unfortunately, Service School has no space to accommodate students who have refused testing. Therefore:
- We advise that students who are refusing testing stay home to accommodate their needs.
- If students do attend school, they will be assigned to stay in their testing ELA/Math teacher’s classroom and may only read a book during the testing sessions.
- Per testing guidelines, no homework, computer work, or electronic devices are allowed in the testing rooms.
We believe that students should excel at their daily academic and extracurricular activities and expect that students will value and put forth the same effort in our required state testing each year. The MAPS Assessment is not only a test to complete, but a tool used to provide us with information on student achievement, areas of strength and need, and progress toward mastery of the skills and concepts outlined in the Alaska English Language Arts and Mathematics Standards. These assessments also provide information to parents, educators, policymakers, and communities about how Alaska’s schools and districts are performing.
Again, Service High uses this testing information to inform our instruction for students as they progress through high school. Moreover, each year our state testing scores are calculated in the State of Alaska’s Service High School Report Card. Each time a student or parent refuses to take the MAPS Assessment test, the lack of participation hurts Service High School as we have incomplete data.
We acknowledge and understand some many anxieties and stresses come along with testing, but we believe this state testing provides a space for students to shine and prepare for future testing situations. Please keep in mind the following before making a final opt-out decision:
- MAPS tests are not timed, so students may take as much time to complete them as needed.
- Students will not miss any new content or assignments in classes, as all 9th Tier II and Tier III (10th grade -12 grade) students will be participating in testing.
- Students will also not be penalized for any make-up testing sessions.
We ask that you strongly consider your testing refusal and encourage you to allow your student the ability to demonstrate their academic strengths. Please note: Parent refusals must be completed at least 2 days before testing begins to allow the school to make appropriate adjustments and accommodations. If you still wish to opt-out your student of Fall MAPS testing, please fill out .
If you have questions please email the Freshmen Academy Principal: Palmisano_Jennifer@asdk12.org
Blessings,

Cougar Community Connection: Freshman Class of 2028
Freshmen Class of 2028 - Welcome!
Dear Guardians,
The first day of high school (8/15) being reserved for 9th graders is a deliberate approach to ensure a smooth transition for these students as they enter a new phase in their education. Here's a breakdown of the reasons and the schedule you've provided:
Reasons for a 9th-Grade-Only First Day:
Acclimation: High school can be a big change, and having a day just for 9th graders allows them to get used to the new environment without the added pressure of older students around.
Building Community: This day helps students connect with their peers and begin forming relationships with teachers and mentors, creating a sense of belonging from the start.
Reducing Anxiety: Starting high school can be nerve- wracking. A dedicated day helps reduce stress by providing a more relaxed atmosphere to navigate the new school.
Setting Expectations: It allows the school to communicate expectations, norms, and values clearly to the incoming class, setting the tone for their high school career.
Snapshot of the First Day for Freshmen:
8:25-8:45 - Arrival and Breakfast:
Students arrive and gather in the cafeteria for breakfast.
All staff are present to welcome and rally the students as they enter.
8:45-9:20 - Gym/Mock Graduation:

Teachers assist in moving students to their seats in the staff section.
9:20-9:25 - Meeting Mentors:
9:30-11:45 - Tours and Activities:
Students participate in tours around the school and engage in various activities to familiarize themselves with the layout and resources.
11:45-12:30 - BBQ Lunch and Activities:
Mini Schedule After Lunch:
After lunch, students will follow a mini version of their class schedule to get a feel for how their day will typically run.
1st Period: 12:40 - 1:00 (possible announcements during this time)
2nd Period: 1:07 - 1:27

Cougar Community Connection: Back to School Edition
July 26th, 2024
Our Service Vision and Goals: All Students Succeeding in College, Career, and Life.
Greetings Cougar Families, Students, and Staff,
Happy Summer!
I know many of you are still in full-time summer mode, but I wanted to reach out and welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year at Service High. We all look forward to a successful year as we continue to partner to inspire and support our students to be college, career-, and life-ready.
Our Commitment: Service High School believes in an education focused on excellence, integrity, and perseverance. We will continue to support our students in developing significant ownership of their learning. All the Service staff is dedicated to breaking down barriers that limit our students’ access to relevant academic and career technical support and challenging learning opportunities they need to excel.
This first edition of the Cougar Community Connection contains information on school start time, registration, the new block bell schedule, the Freshman Academy, attendance, cell phone policy, and dress code.
Start Time: On May 9, 2023, the Î÷Ê©Ö±²¥APP Î÷Ê©Ö±²¥APP approved changing school start times to be implemented beginning the 2024-25 school year. Research indicates students will see an increase in alertness, improved cognitive functionality, increased memory retention, improved focus in the classroom, and more. It is anticipated that attendance rates will go up and absences will go down. For our students who drive, it means they will be more rested and more alert when traveling to and from our campuses. For more information, please visit:
Freshman Academy: As of this school year 24-25, we will launch the Freshman Academy fully. All freshmen will take the Freshman Seminar course, a semester course that teaches essential skills including taking initiative and responsibility, effective teamwork and communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Along with career exploration and development, this course will help students make an informed decision about selecting an academy for their sophomore through senior years. It’s the beginning of a student’s journey to shape their future. Freshman Academy students will visit at least one college, tour the campus, talk with a panel of college students, and see what life is like on a college campus. After selecting an academy and pathway for grades 10 – 12, freshmen will participate in the Academy Celebration at the end of the school year. They will meet fellow academy members, and academy teachers, and celebrate the opportunities that await them throughout high school.
Professional Learning Communities: Just a reminder that every Monday staff will be participating in professional learning communities. School buses will have later pick-up times on Mondays. Please refer to the linked start times and bell schedule below.
Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices: Service High School envisions a productive learning environment emphasizing communication, attentive listening, and active participation. Research indicates that using cell phones in the classroom has proven detrimental to the learning environment. Giving students a vacation from their phones and earbuds gives our staff the best chance of maximizing each student’s learning, and creating distraction-reduced learning environments. Your parental support to have a phone-free school is essential. Students can use their cell phones before and after school, during lunch, and during passing periods. No cell phones, earbuds, or other personal electronic devices will be used in classrooms. Students carrying cell phones, earbuds, or other personal electronic devices (personal gaming devices, for example) must silence/remove them and secure them in a designated classroom storage space or their bag before class starts. For more details, please review:
.
Attendance: Service High School will continue to focus on increasing students’ attendance; students who attend school consistently are better prepared for college, careers, and life. Your support and advocacy for students to attend school daily is essential. Please open the link to learn more about attendance.
Dress Code Expectations: Another area of focus for Service High this year is professional and appropriate dress. Parents, your support of the Service High dress code is essential to help us prepare students for college, career, and life. Here is the link to the dress code expectations at Service High.
Key Information to Know (please use the links):

LCpl Grant Fraser was attached to Lima Company through the Marine Forces Reserve 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division. Fraser died on August 3rd, 2005 while serving combat operations in Haditha, Iraq.
The Eyes of Freedom Exhibit - Service High School Schedule:
Sunday, July 21, 2024 - 6PM - The Eyes of Freedom Exhibit will be transported to Service High School from JBER via an honor escort (by way of Post Road Gate, Reeve Blvd, 5th Ave, Boniface, MLK, Elmore, & Abbott).

The display will be open to the public outside the auditorium.
We welcome all students, faculty, and community members to honor LCpl Grant Fraser and all who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Eyes Of Freedom functions as a traveling memorial across the United States, dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of all who answer our nation's call, ensuring that those who gave the ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten. Silent Battle, a sculpture by Anita Miller, was created after witnessing firsthand the struggles of our returning combat veterans coping with post-traumatic stress and the loss of their brothers and sisters in combat and at home. Silent Battle initiates tough conversations about veteran PTS to support our veterans and make sure their voices are heard.
The Eyes of Freedom memorial exhibit with the portrait of Grant Fraser will be on display in a total of three locations (JBER Air Show, Service High School, UAA - Alaska Airlines Center).

Dear Cougar Community,
Khan Academy is an online resource that allows students to learn material that is uniquely appropriate for them. Students can learn and strengthen their math or other course skills by using interactive practice and tutorials. Khan Academy has launched a new pilot to test an artificial intelligence tool—a GPT-powered learning guide called Khanmigo—to assist students and teachers. As AI is still evolving, Khan Academy has invited Service High School to help beta test their new program. We, as a district/community, are thrilled to embark on this new journey with Khan Academy, contributing to the evolution of the educational landscape. Our district's goal is to be a leader in innovative teaching and learning practices, making this opportunity a perfect fit for our mission.
Khanmigo will introduce a new layer of support within Khan Academy, guiding students through their lessons and providing assistance akin to that of a personal tutor. Moreover, it's designed to aid teachers with tasks such as crafting lesson plans.
Khan Academy has developed . We have used prompt engineering to guide and narrow the focus of the AI. This allows us to train and tailor the AI for a learning setting. As an example, parents and teachers will have access to the chat history and activities of students who use Khanmigo.
Should you choose to opt out of the features, your student’s Khan Academy account will not have access to the new Khanmigo AI features.
We are very excited about having the opportunity to support this Khan Academy effort. If you have any additional questions related to this work, please email our Khan Champion and librarian Scott_Ellen@asdk12.org. -
